Abstract
Perhaps mathematics education is not considered as an integration project or as relevant in relation to issues about migration. In this seminar we will approach mathematics education from perspectives of integration and migration to show how mathematics education can influence migrants in Sweden and elsewhere. Based on findings in mathematics education research, including our own research, we discuss for example the in(ex)cluding and gatekeeping role of mathematics which may restrict or enable participation in the labor market and societal democratic participation. Further, mathematics education plays a role in how students with migrant backgrounds are being constructed and positioned as learners and knowers of mathematics in particular ways. At the seminar, we are interested in initiating a dialogue about how multidisciplinary approaches could generate further knowledge about issues of migration. Most welcome.
