About the project
The RoboIcons project examines a selection of robotic artworks as a means to investigate how artists invite people to imagine life with robots in the future. Amongst other forms of interactions and relationships that people will have with robots, there is a cultural one - which is the core focus of the RoboIcons project. Artworks tend to explore technological possibilities unconstrained by the instrumental and commercial demands of the industry. Using cultural theories by W.J.T Mitchell and Anne Balsamo, I will explore robotic art in two steps: first I will identify how each artwork looks at the robot as a cultural icon, and then I will examine how robots are set within a broader context of technological imagination.
