At the Department of Childhood, Education and Society, sociological and childhood sociology studies form a key research profile focusing on childhood within and beyond preschool, leisure-time centers, and school. We study how discourses, institutions, and social actors shape childhood and children’s living conditions, using perspectives on class, gender, ethnicity, age, space, and culture. Our approach draws on diverse theories and methods from the humanities and social sciences.

Our Research

The research group meets regularly to discuss scholarly texts and provide collegial feedback on article drafts, research proposals, and conference contributions. In addition to these ongoing meetings, the group invites key scholars in the field to the department’s advanced seminar. Members also participate in conferences and networking events related to children and youth studies. Several members are currently engaged in a project focusing on autoethnographic memory work connected to childhood.
