About the course

The course aims for you to develop knowledge and understanding of academic language; you will develop your ability and confidence to communicate in English, both in writing and orally, and be prepared for further academic studies.

The course contains in-depth review of the characteristics of academic writing and presentations, as well as exercises in applying this knowledge in assignments. First, you will analyze and write essays, as well as analyze peer essays. Second, you will study rhetoric and practice presentation techniques with a special focus on the use of different speaking skills and the use of different digital media in oral presentations.

This course can be taken parallel to its sister courses to complete a 30 credit semester, offered as 3 separate courses in the series:

• Basic English Reading and Vocabulary Skills for University, 7.5 credits

• Basic English Grammar Skills for University, 7.5 credits

• Basic English Writing and Presenting Skills for University, 15 credits.

The University provides students who participate in or who have completed a course with the opportunity to make known their experiences and viewpoints with regards to the course by completing a course evaluation administered by the University. The

University will compile and summarize the results of course evaluations as well as informing participants of the results and any decisions relating to measures initiated in response to the course evaluations. The results will be made available to the students (HF 1:14).
