About the education

This Master’s programme focuses on English language education. With the guidance of our expert faculty, you will study methods of English language teaching, the integration of technology in the classroom, educational theory, and research in second language acquisition.

English and Education

The programme immerses you in developing practical techniques, methods, and materials for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), such as virtual exchange, storytelling and creative writing. You also will study English grammar in the context of TESOL, investigate adolescent language development and explore bilingual and multicultural education.

Areas of special expertise exist in the fields of second language learning, creative writing, children’s literature, sociolinguistics, educational linguistics, and psycholinguistics.

The program allows you to build on the solid foundation of your bachelor’s degree in language(s), linguistics, literature, anthropology or sociology, education, or a related area.

Course structure

The two-year master's in English and Education consists of three semesters (90 credits) that are programme-specific, and one semester (30 credits) of non-compulsory courses. The three obligatory semesters are organised in the following way.

  • Literature and Education; The Building Blocks of English: Sounds and Words; Theory of Science and Academic Writing; Green Cultural Studies and English Teaching (Autumn semester)
  • Language Teaching in Theory and Practice I and II; Sociolinguistics; Content and Language integrated learning (Spring semester)
  • Master’s thesis (Autumn semester)

The optional courses could either be chosen from non-obligatory courses on offer at Malmö University or be taken at a partner university, or consist of previously taken courses validated on entering the programme.

With a Master’s degree in English and Education, you are attractive to employers looking for a highly qualified individual with expert knowledge in language education.

An international MA in English and Education also provides you with the academic background you need in order to apply for doctoral studies in language education and related fields of research.

Applicants should be aware that this programme provides students with a Master’s in English and Education, not a Swedish teaching certificate. Certification is handled through a different process in Sweden and is subject to country-specific requirements that are not met by this program. However, many of the courses in the English and Education Master's Programme are comparable to courses in the secondary and upper-secondary English teaching certification programmes at Malmö University, and one could apply for transfer credits if such a path was chosen for future studies.

Knowledge and learning in languages are beneficial in most industries, including as a communicator, human resource officer, teacher, or business leader.

Education in languages can create new opportunities in the international labour market. The programme also gives students the chance to proceed to third-cycle education. Today, there’s a great need for humanities researchers and social scientists whose research is focused on education and didactics.

What are the main things that students will learn during the programme?

Students will gain subject knowledge of English alongside a specialisation in education. You will acquire advanced level knowledge in literary studies, foreign language learning, grammar, linguistics, sociolinguistics, language development, and cultural studies. Through the education, the students receive a didactic insight into language and literature.
