The most recent elections to the European Parliament confirmed a further rise of support for Eurosceptical parties around Europe. A consensual and general definition of Euroscepticism describes it as an opposition to the process of European integration. However, Euroscepticism undertakes a wide scope of various forms, and cannot be interpreted as a homogeneous movement. These parties vary from far-left to far-right and from soft-Eurosceptic to hard-Eurosceptic. In the context of Brexit, the hard-Eurosceptic position weakened substantially, making Euroscepticism an even more volatile and complex phenomenon.
Therefore, the project intends to capture an evolution of positions of Eurosceptic parties by comparing their attitude to various issues from ecology to immigration, and tracking their ratings in opinion polls. Subsequently, it will assess similarities and differences between them. Moreover, the project aspires to forecast probable changes of the positions and standing of these parties. In order to achieve those goals, the project foresees the creation of Eurosceptic-Observer, a special webpage that will research Eurosceptic political parties in Europe by tracking the above-mentioned trends.
On the other hand, the project strives to organize debates on crucial issues on the local level through Europe by gathering soft Eurosceptic citizens and pro-EU voters. The debates will prove that the EU is not ignoring more moderate Eurosceptic fears and objections. The aim is to avoid a further political polarization within EU societies and to engage soft Eurosceptic citizens in dialogue and try to regain their support for the EU’s project. The citizen manifesto concerning the future of the EU will constitute the final outcome of debates.
