Global engagement has always been a core value for Malmö University. We are driven by the belief that with a diversity of minds anything is possible. We work with a diverse range of international partners to tackle global challenges.

Our vision

As a socially engaged, urban University in the heart of Malmö, our aim is to contribute to a more equal society through research-based knowledge, critical reflection and action. We don’t shy away from complex and uncomfortable issues. Working across disciplines, our international collaborations reflect our commitment to progressive research, inclusive academic environments and life-long learning.

The University focuses on three core themes within internationalisation:

  • Internationalisation for everyone — internationalisation at home
  • International relations and networks
  • International mobility (including studies and internships abroad for students, hosting international students, staff mobility and teacher exchanges)

The University also has an Advisory Board for Global Engagement, which assists management in strategic decisions regarding internationalisation.

The global campus

Internationalisation at home (IaH) is a term that was coined right here at Malmö University when we were still in our early years. Today the concept lives on as a way to think about how to work with internationalisation from a local starting point.

IaH involves both strengthening diversity among staff and students, as well as developing skills that are beneficial in a global perspective. IaH asks how we can nurture intercultural competencies and promote language education. Or, for instance, how we can encourage our staff and students to gain experiences abroad.

Widening participation

Making sure that everyone has the opportunity to be heard and affect change is crucial to social change and equality. We value the contributions of our students and staff, which is why widening participation in education is one of our priorities. We do this by improving access to higher education for people who are newly arrived in Sweden, collaborating with stakeholders, as well as focussing on projects within migration research, among other initiatives.

Challenge-based learning

Challenge-based learning is an approach that combines student-centred and collaborative methods with socially engaged attitudes towards learning. We actively work to make sure that our education is problem-orientated rather than discipline-oriented. This means that the focus is on understanding real-life challenges that impact society today. Some examples of methods used in many of our programmes are experience-based learning, inquiry-based learning, and entrepreneurial learning. What these methods have in common is their emphasis on dialogue and exchange with teachers, critical thinking, and understanding that learning is just as much about the process as it is about the outcome.

Equality integration

We are committed to creating more balance and equality in academia. Since 2017, the University has been working on a government mandate on equality integration, where our action plan has prioritised research environments, equal career opportunities and gender-integrated vocational education. The aim is to foster gender-integrated processes and more equal research environments. There are also several initiatives underway to increase equal job opportunities, as well as equipping students to become more conscious of, and critical towards, gendered norms when it comes to career choices.
