A university degree is an investment in your future. For studies at Malmö University, some students are required to pay application and tuition fees.

About fees

Students with citizenship in countries outside of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are generally required to pay application and tuition fees.

Swedish citizens, as well as citizens of other EU/EEA countries or Switzerland, are not required to pay application and tuition fees. As an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen, you must upload documentation showing your citizenship to your application on University Admissions.

Fee-paying students are subject to the same services, rights and obligations as non-fee-paying students, such as study and career counselling, student health care, disability services, access to library and university facilities. 

Due to the requirements of the Swedish Migration Agency, students required to pay tuition fees need to pay their first tuition fee instalment – for the first semester of studies – before submitting a residence permit application for studies in higher education to the Swedish Migration Agency.

Tuition fees do not apply for exchange students, PhD students or EU/EEA students.

If you have been admitted to a course/programme but don't wish to accept your place, please make sure to decline it at www.universityadmissions.se. Log in to your account, go to Applications and follow the instructions. Please also notify Malmö University by sending an email to tuitionfees@mau.se. This is important as it notifies Malmö University that you won't be attending and also makes the place free for someone on the waiting list.

What does the tuition fee cover?

For programme students, the tuition fee covers:

  • full-time studies on bachelor’s or master’s level, 60 credits per academic year;
  • an accommodation offer from University Housing (rent is not included);
  • one Swedish or English language course; 
  • comprehensive insurance (FAS by Kammarkollegiet) and 
  • administrative services.

The tuition fees listed below are for degree programmes starting academic year 2023. The amounts are shown in Swedish Crowns (SEK).

Payment process

The tuition fee must be paid per semester and in advance. It cannot be divided into smaller instalments. Below is a step-by-step guide on the payment process.

  1. An email with payment information will be sent to admitted students after the Notification of Selection Results have been published.
  2. Choose your payment method. We strongly recommend students to pay by card.
  3. Make sure to allow for extra time when making the payment. Even if your bank statement shows the amount has been withdrawn, it may take up to a couple of weeks to confirm payments. 
  4. A confirmation email will be sent to you once Malmö University has received your payment. 
  5. Malmö University will notify the Swedish Migration Agency about your payment.

Your admission is conditional until you have paid the tuition fee. If the payment is not received by the deadline, you will lose your place on the programme or course that you have been conditionally admitted to.

Please note that the conditionally admitted status will not change in your University Admissions profile, even though Malmö University has confirmed your payment.

Payment methods

Malmö University accepts the three payment methods listed below. Keep in mind that you are responsible for any charges from your bank and currency exchange fees associated with the payment.

We can only provide invoices in SEK. You’re responsible for paying the correct amount. To pay the right amount, please ask your bank or use a currency converter. If the amount received is lower than the one stated on the invoice, we won’t be able to register the payment, so please make sure to send the right amount. Any exceeding amount will be deducted from your next tuition fee invoice.

Malmö University offers the option to pay by credit card online. Admitted students will receive detailed information on how to pay.

Payment by international transfer

How to make an international transfer:

  • Inform your bank that you wish to make a transfer in Swedish Crowns (SEK). If your bank cannot transfer in Swedish Crowns, make sure the amount you transfer is equivalent to the invoiced amount of Swedish Crowns.
  • Include your name and personal identification number as a reference with the transfer (you can find your personal identification number on the top-left corner of your Notification of Selection Results).

Payment by Swedish bank account

If you pay your tuition fee from a Swedish bank account, you can:

  • transfer to Malmö University's account 1281 0112584 at Danske Bank, or;
  • make a payment to Bankgiro 5052-4958.

Refunds

Refund of tuition fees is only possible if a student is prevented from participating in the programme/ courses due to the following extraordinary circumstances.

Denied residence permit

You are eligible for a refund if you do not receive a Swedish residence permit in time within three weeks of the start of the semester, if you submit an early withdrawal and a refund application (see below) to Malmö University at the latest within three weeks of the start of the semester.

Other extraordinary circumstances

You are also eligible for a refund for the upcoming semester if you submit a refund application (see below) to Malmö University at the latest on the day before the start of the semester for one of the following reasons:

  • You have been conditionally admitted to a master’s programme because you had not yet received a bachelor's degree certificate at the time of application, and you do not meet the requirement to hold a degree by the start of the semester.
  • The programme syllabus contains admissions requirements for continuation to the upcoming semester and you do not meet the admissions requirements.
  • Your fee status changes (Note: if your fee status changes during the semester, refund for that ongoing semester is not possible).
  • You receive a scholarship and have already paid your tuition fee.
  • You have been granted a credit transfer exceeding 15 credits (Note: If you have remaining semesters, the amount will be deducted from your next invoice. If it is your last semester, the amount will be refunded to you).
  • By paying the tuition fee, the student agrees to Malmö University’s tuition fee refund policy.
  • All refund applications must be submitted through the online form.
  • An individual assessment is always made to determine whether a refund of the tuition fee can be granted.
  • Refunds are never possible for an ongoing course/semester, regardless of the circumstances.
  • Refund requests for amounts lower than 1,000 SEK are never processed, regardless of the circumstances.

Apply for a tuition fee refund

Follow the steps below to apply for a tuition fee refund.

  2. A decision on your refund application is normally made within 4 weeks

Please note that the processing time can take longer if you submit a refund application in August-September. You will be notified of the decision by email. Please also note that the total processing time for the refund to reach your account might be longer if you paid by international bank transfer.

Refund payments are always made in SEK and Malmö University does not take into account changes in the exchange rate.

Approved refunds are always made to the same account from which the payment was originally made. If the payment was made by card, the refund will be made to the same card. If the payment was made by bank transfer, the refund will be made to the same account. This rule applies regardless of whether you have paid from your own card/account or through another card/account holder. No exception to this rule can be made.

Payment and repayment of fees to and from Belarus, Iran and Russia

Due to international regulations, it is currently not allowed for Swedish universities to conduct monetary transactions with Belarus, Iran and Russia. You should be aware of this when you make a payment to Malmö University, and be conscious about the account you choose to make the payment from. A reimbursement is always made to the same account the payment was originally made from. Consequently, we recommend that you choose a payment method that works even if a refund must be made.
