Our master's programmes
The purpose of the master programme in Dental Science is to provide students with in-depth knowledge within the main field of dentistry with a particular focus on the chosen dental discipline or subarea, as well as scientific knowledge and skills. The programme's main focus is on theoretical and research-preparatory elements that provide the student with subject knowledge and scientific training.
Educational goals
After taking the programme, the student should be able to critically assess scientific literature; conduct a focused literature review; with guidance identify a research question and plan, implement and evaluate a scientific project within the subject; present the study results to the scientific community nationally and/or internationally; and prepare a written thesis and ideally also a manuscript draft for publication of the research in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
Future prospects
The student should be able to function as a resource dentist in the selected clinical dental discipline/subarea covered by the programme, as well as be qualified for further postgraduate studies.
About the programme
The programme consists of several separate but connected courses, including a degree thesis, over a period of two or three years. Year 3 is focused on clinical training. The teaching language is English.

Clinical training
In-depth subject knowledge is obtained through auscultations, seminars, preclinical training and participation in the department's regular activities. The clinical element within the framework of the master's degree is thus limited in the two-year programme. In the three-year programme the final year provides advanced clinically focused training.

Degree
After completion the graduate will be awarded the degree of Master of Science (MDSc) with a major in Dental Science. Both programmes also qualifies for further research studies, such as doctoral (PhD) studies at the faculty.
Application and requirements
Requirements
- A dental degree (D.D.S., B.D.S or equivalent) including at least three years of full-time studies (180 ECTS).
- Two years’ of documented work experience as a dentist after graduation.
- The English-language requirements are the same for all Swedish university programmes: English 6, also referred to as English B.
Application and admittance
Application
The programme will commence on 2 February 2026 and participants are required to be present in Malmö, Sweden for the duration. The application period is 15 June 2025 to 15 July 2025.
To submit your application, you will need to enter the password "maf25".
Admittance
The number of students admitted to the programme is limited. All paperwork concerning validation of credentials and the application procedure will be managed with assistance from our partner, Swedish Healthcare Academy, who has long-standing experience in arranging for entry of international students to all major universities in Sweden. On attendance, Swedish Healthcare Academy will assist you in making the necessary arrangements for the stay in Malmö for you and accompanying family members.

Tuition fee
This education is exclusively offered as a contract education and will be regulated via an agreement between the Faculty of Odontology and the employer or sponsor of the student. Malmö University does not offer a grant or scholarship for programme participation or for living expenses.
The annual tuition fee covers all examinations, theory classes, office space, research project supervision, all costs related to clinical participation at the University Dental Clinic, including uniforms (work clothes), as well as clinical supervision, dental materials and instruments, and insurance costs.
