Borrowing and requesting books
requesting books
Malmö University Library is open to everyone, including those who are not students or university staff. Learn more about library cards, loan periods, renewals, and requests.
Library card/Library account
Anyone aged 18 or over is welcome to apply for a library account, borrow books, and use the library’s computers.
Students and Staff
If you are a student or a member of staff, you use a Multicard to borrow books. The Multicard automatically functions as your library card. You log in using your Multicard number or personal identity number and a PIN code.
General Public
To borrow books, you need to apply for a library account.
- Once you have submitted your application, you can place reservations on books.
Please note that available books cannot be reserved. - Before you can borrow, you must verify your account by presenting a valid photo ID at one of our libraries. Verification must be completed within 21 days of submitting your application.
- You borrow books using the library’s self-service machines with your personal identity number and PIN code. The library does not issue physical library cards.
Apply for a library account online
If you prefer to set up a library account in person, you are welcome to visit any of our libraries. Please go to the information desk, and we will be happy to help you. Remember to bring a valid photo ID.
About PIN Codes
You will need a PIN code, a four-digit number, to:
- Borrow items using the library’s self-service machines
- Check and update your library account details
- Place requests and renew loans
Students and Staff
If you already have a multicard, your PIN code will be transferred automatically.
Not sure what your multicard PIN code is? Check here!
General public
If you don’t have a PIN code or have forgotten it, you can request a new one online.
Loans, Renewals and Late Fees
On the "My Loans" page, you can view your current loans and reservations and renew your books. You can also change your PIN code and update your contact details. Log in with your card number/personal identity number and PIN code.
Borrow books:
- You may borrow books and films for 3 weeks.
- Obligatory course literature is always available in one copy at the library for you to read (sometimes as an e-book). These are labelled “EJ HEMLÅN” (Library use only).
Renew books:
- Books are automatically renewed if no one else requests them – up to 10 times for students and the general public, and up to 20 times for staff. You may also renew manually; if you do, these renewals will still count towards the maximum of 10 or 20 renewals.
- We notify you by email which of your books need to be returned and which have been renewed. This email is sent three days before the due date.
- Occasionally, our emails end up in junk mail folders. Always check due dates by logging in to My Loans. Please note that even if the email does not reach you, it is always your responsibility to renew or return items on time.
If your books are overdue:
- A late fee is charged if you return books after the due date. The cost is SEK 10 per book and per day.
- If your books have not been renewed due to requests or a maximum number of renewals, the library sends out an invoice after about a month. The invoice fee is SEK 400/book, of witch SEK 200/book is an administration fee that is paid even if you return the book.
- Overdue fees are most easily paid by card at the library information desk.
- Fees can also be paid via bank transfer (account number: 5052-4958). Please enter project number 1211 together with your name or personal identity number in the message field.
Payments made by bank transfer may take some time to be registered and for the fee to be removed from your library account. If you would like to speed up the process, you can take a screenshot from your online bank and email it to biblioteket@mau.se. This will allow us to confirm your payment and remove the fee from your account.
Requesting books

Requesting books
If the book you are looking for is out on loan, you can request it in Libsearch free of charge. Search for the book you wish to request, click on the "Access options" button, and then “Place a hold". Please note that you cannot request a book if copies are available at any of our three libraries.
Returning books
You can return books during the Libraries' opening hours. You can return books at any of our three libraries, regardless of which library you borrowed the book from.
See "Opening hours and contacts" for current opening hours
You can also return what you have borrowed by post. You pay the postage for returns yourself and are responsible for the books until they reach the library.
