Exploring ways of knowing with AI

This talk seeks to open out discussion around ways to learn how to tentatively yet critically and creatively know how to know about, within and through AI tools and technologies. The focus is on LLMs and agents and penumbral knowing via experimental design infused practices. The communicative substance to be presented is engaged autopoetic reflection centred on dialogues with two highly engaged interaction/design developer-educator-researchers. I further position my own ethnographic and related research meta-discourses within an anticipatory design perspective. I draw on contextualised narrative events recounted by my colleagues to describe and problematise emergent ‘mattering’ of LLMs and agentive futures literacies implications for design pedagogies and inquiries.

Academic profile and research contributions

Andrew Morrison works within and across design, urbanism and landscape, including design writing, fiction and criticism, and design and technology critiques. His applied research extends to design education, artistic research and scholarly communication. He has coordinated the AHO PhD School, supervised and examined widely on practice-based doctoral design research. Prominent funded research projects include YOUrban, Future North and FUEL4DESIGN and the AHO Research Review 2014-2017. Book publications span Inside Multimodal Composition (2010), Exploring Digital Design (2010) and Design Futures Literacies (2023, Vols 1 & 2: https://fuel4design.org/).

Andrew was co-chair of Design + Power NORDES 2017 and NORDES 2025 on Relational Design, a member of Anticipation Conference Series Steering Group over the past decade and chair of Anticipation 2019 Conference hosted by AHO. His recent work engages in design fiction, futures literacies, speculative inquiry and modes of mediating mixed methods and articulations of transdisciplinary anticipatory design and artistic research. He has published in numerous venues, formal and experimental, and is currently writing a poetics of anticipation.

Andrew has previously been the Director of the Centre for Design Research at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO) and currently leads the Design Futures research group at AHO. He is member of the Advisory Board of the Malmö Research Centre for Imagining and Co-Creating Futures.
