Education Meets Research for Real: The Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) Approach

About the seminar: Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) at Malmö University connects research and education by engaging undergraduate and graduate students in multidisciplinary, long-term faculty-led research projects. Originating at Georgia Tech and now successfully established at the Faculty of Health and Society and Sustainable Digitalization Research Center, VIP has grown steadily, with 104 students involved in 32 projects this semester. Students gain hands-on research, innovation, leadership, and mentoring experience while strengthening their CVs. At the same time, faculty benefit from sustained student contributions that support ambitious, collaborative research and broaden interdisciplinary scholarship. Petri Gudmundsson, Senior Lecturer and coordinator for the VIP project at Malmö University, will present the project and the experiences working with allowing students to become co-researchers during their studies.

Reflecting on good PhD supervision practices: a lesson for the Swedish Higher Education System

About the seminar: PhD education is one of the core missions of higher education, and PhD supervisors play a critical role in this process. In this discussion, I will reflect on PhD supervision practices in the Swedish academic system, explore lessons from established supervisor training programs, and share my own experiences balancing perspectives from both STEM and the social sciences.

Should spatial workplace concepts at universities (still) differ from those in corporate settings? Insights from a theoretical and empirical perspective

Speaker: Katja Ninnemann, Professor in Digitalisation and Workspace Management, HTW Berlin - University of Applied Sciences, Germany

About the seminar: Hybrid work models, digitalization, sustainability strategies, and economic aspects are increasing pressure not only on the design and organization of workplaces in companies but also on the academic workplace. The key question is whether we can apply innovative workplace concepts, such as activity-based offices, to the university setting. Dr. Katja Ninnemann, professor at HTW Berlin University of Applied Sciences, will present insights from her research on hybrid workspaces from both theoretical and empirical perspectives, discuss changes and challenges currently being observed in higher education institutions, and outline strategies that can inform decision-making processes.
