Evaluation of family group conferences at all stages of the child welfare process

Professor Jonathan Scourfield: The Family VOICE study

This is a presentation of the results of an implementation evaluation of family group conferences (FGCs) at all stages of the child welfare process in the UK – the Family VOICE study.

There are two separate studies. Firstly, there is the largest UK study to date of family-reported FGC experiences and outcomes – 380 individuals from 155 families were recruited and asked to complete questionnaires at three time points. Twenty-five family members also took part in qualitative interviews. Secondly, there is a quasi-experimental comparison of children’s social care system outcomes for children who had an FGC (n≈3000) and a propensity-score-matched comparison group of similar children from local authorities that did not offer FGCs, with a two-year follow up - the longest in a UK study to date.
