How to approach sites of public memory – Matthew Teutsch

"In what to the slave is the Fourth of July?," Frederick Douglass stated, “We have to do with the past only as we can make it useful to the present and the future.” With Douglass’ statement in mind, this seminar will look at sites of public memory in the United States and elsewhere, examining what these sites tell us about our current moment and how we view the world.

Matthew Teutsch is an associate professor of English at Piedmont University. Currently, he is a Jean d'Alembert fellow at the University Paris-Sacaly where is working on a projected entitled Crossroads of Fascism: The Reverberations of Jim Crow, the Holocaust, and Colonialism in the Present.
