Abstract

This seminar presents the ongoing doctoral research of Xin, which explores how somatic practices can help people feel a deeper sense of belonging within their urban environment by attending to their surroundings. Motivated by climate urgency and Malmö as a site of superdiversity, the project investigates how participatory design can invite broader engagement and amplify voices that are not always heard in climate conversations.

At the centre of the work lies the concept of atmospheric belonging – how humans relate to the sky, clouds, weather, and immediate surroundings as part of their everyday home. The research asks how participatory design might nurture deeper human–world relationships through diffractive approaches that foreground somatics, relationality, and multispecies inclusion.
