Social Resilience and Lived Integration: Migrant Belonging Across Welfare and Civil Society Spaces

Abstract

In this presentation, I discuss social resilience and integration as lived and relational processes anchored in the social experiences and practices through which migrants negotiate belonging across welfare institutions and civil society spaces. Drawing on my previous research in Sweden (including young adult migrants’ social experiences and the role of community spaces such as the church café), as well as ongoing work in Germany, I explore how migrants mobilize status, networks, support, and visibility to navigate and co produce integration in practice. I argue that social resilience is an inherently a social phenomenon developing through migrants’ continuous engagement with social, political, economic, and cultural environments, which constitute lived integration. The presentation highlights how belonging develops through interactions between migrants, public institutions, and civil society actors, offering a ground up perspective on enacted social resilience and lived integration beyond formal policy indicators for integration.

Short bio

Azher Hameed Qamar is a migration researcher in the COFUND Migration, Diaspora and Citizenship Programme at the University of Münster (Germany). He is an interdisciplinary scholar of migration, integration, and social resilience. His work examines enacted social resilience, lived integration, belonging, and the relational mechanisms through which migrants navigate welfare systems and civil society spaces. His research combines qualitative methods (including participatory approaches and life course perspectives) with a strong focus on social resilience and migrants’ lived experiences.
