Over All Saints’ Day weekend, thousands of candles are lit all over Malmö. We visit a grave or a memorial garden and think of those who are no longer with us – perhaps someone we lost recently, or someone who has been gone for many years. Music can bring us together around an experience that is otherwise very personal.

We may listen to the same music together, but experience it in different ways. On 1 November, we will gather at Sankt Johannes Church to do just that, when the Malmö Academic Choir and Orchestra perform Mozart’s Requiem under the baton of Daniel Hansson.

Perhaps you know the music well; perhaps you are encountering it for the first time. We come to the concert with different experiences and expectations, but for a while we share the same space and the same music, each with our own experience.

Mozart never got to hear his Requiem completed. He died whilst working on the piece and left it unfinished. A work about death was itself cut short by death. Now it is up to us to gather around the music and make it our own experience.

The concert will also take place from 16 to 17 on the same day
