Scholarly Collaborations at the Mid-Career: The Aesthetics of Ethnographic Subjectivity

“how do I combine the aesthetic problem of making individual, flat words add up to something that feels bigger than their individual parts […] how does making affective/aesthetic shifts create new worlds, new ways of being, or coexisting?” – Maggie Nelson in conversation with Björk (2019)

This workshop will leverage the pedagogical potential of relationality, examining how new scholarly paths are created through ethnographic subjectivity. KT Doerr, PhD (Malmö University's Centre for Teaching and Learning) and Lauren Misiaszek, PhD (www.trabajocultural.com) have connected “mid-career” around shared experiments in auto/ethnographic feeling-thinking-doing-making-writing, which understand aesthetics (style, form, and medium) as fundamental to the analysis itself. These experiments have implications for what and whose research matters in academia and broader society, offering an antidote to potentially dehumanizing techo-social trends. 

To experiment with these shifts, we offer the following program:

• 13:00 Arrival and warmup.
• 13:15 Introduction to theoretical and ontological commitments, with examples from work in progress.
• 13:30 Methodological exercise.
• 13:45 Exemplar in creative-critical writing/performative autoethnography.
• 14:15 Explore your own ethnographic subjectivity with an aesthetic tool 
• 14:45 Reflective discussion and closing

All welcome - faculty, students of all levels. No preregistration required.
