Non-invasive Biomedical Analysis
Biomedical Analysis
At the Department of Biomedical Science modern research infrastructure for advanced biomedical analysis has been collected and it is extensively used in research and education nowadays. This includes both hardware and software, namely, a variety of different medically certified devices and modern unvalidated gadgets, as well as specially design program, MultiSens, as described here.
Electrocardiography (ECG)
ECG is a non-invasive diagnostic method used to record the electrical activity of the heart over time. It provides important information about heart rhythm, conduction abnormalities, and cardiovascular health and is widely applied in clinical diagnostics, patient monitoring, and preventive healthcare.
Equipment included
MAC5000, GE Marquette (x2)
MAC5000, GE Marquette 12 lead ECG system (Milwaukee, WI, USA) is for recording standard clinical resting ECG for the purpose to exam electrical heart activity with respect to both timing and amplitude. Results can be used for high-level accuracy in clinical diagnosis and research purposes of heart health and disease.
Medical Ultrasound
Medical ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualise internal organs, tissues, and blood flow in real time. It is widely used in clinical diagnostics due to its safety, portability, and ability to provide rapid assessment without ionising radiation.
Equipment included
Philips EPIQ Elite Diagnostic Ultrasound System with X5-1, C51, eL18-4 and mL26-8 transducers:
Philips EPIQ Elite Diagnostic Ultrasound System (Andover, MA, USA) is an advanced medical ultrasound system with transducers and software to investigate organ anatomy, function and physiology as well as different tissues or phantoms. The transducers use xMatrix (2D and 3D), as well as linear, including high-frequency and curved arrays. The system has software for image analysis in both cardiac, multiple organs, vessels and microvascular advanced analysis.
Siemens ACUSON Redwood Ultrasound System with 5V1 transducer:
Siemens ACUSON Redwood US System (Mountain View, CA, USA) is an advanced medical ultrasound system with transducer and software to investigate organ anatomy, function and physiology of the heart. The transducer uses a phased array with frequencies intended for adult heart examinations. The system has software for advanced cardiac image analysis.
Spirometry
Spirometry is a non-invasive pulmonary function test used to assess lung capacity and airflow by measuring the volume and speed of inhaled and exhaled air. It is commonly applied for the diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Equipment included
Medikro pro Spirometer
Medikro pro spirometer (Kuopio, Finland) is an advanced PC-based professional spirometer for measuring static and dynamic lung volumes and flow, including sensors for automatic BTPS-correction in real time. Vibration Control Tubing eliminates signal noise from tube and patient movements. The software can include protocols for provocation and uses a local database for multiple follow-up measurements and trends.
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis
Bioimpedance analysis is a non-invasive method used to evaluate body composition by measuring the electrical impedance of biological tissues. It is widely applied for assessing parameters, such as body fat, muscle mass, hydration status, and overall nutritional and physiological condition.
Equipment included
MC780MA
Tanita MC-780MA from Tanita (Tokyo, Japan) is a multi-frequency segmental bioimpedance analyzer designed for rapid non-invasive assessment of body composition. The device differentiates between individuals’ fat mass, muscle mass, bone mass, and total body water, while also automatically calculating body mass index, metabolic age, visceral fat rating, and segmental body composition parameters for different body regions.
3D Body Scanning
3D body scanning is a non-invasive technology used to create accurate three-dimensional digital models of the human body. It enables rapid assessment of body shape, posture, and anthropometric parameters, and is increasingly applied in healthcare, fitness, ergonomics, and personalised medicine.
Equipment included
S100 3D scanner
Styku S100 (Redlands, CA, USA) is a non-invasive 3D body scanning system designed for rapid anthropometric and body composition assessment. The scanner uses infrared depth sensors and rotational imaging technology to generate a high-resolution three-dimensional digital model of the human body, enabling automatic measurement of body circumferences, posture, body shape, and composition-related parameters within seconds.
Cardiovascular Diagnostics
Advanced cardiovascular diagnostics is a group of non-invasive methods used to evaluate the condition and function of the heart and blood vessels. These techniques enable rapid assessment of cardiovascular parameters, such as heart rhythm, blood circulation, vascular stiffness, and blood oxygenation, and are widely applied in clinical diagnostics, preventive medicine, and health monitoring.
Equipment included
AngioScan-01
AngioScan-01 from AngioScan-Electronics (Moscow, Russia) is a non-invasive cardiovascular diagnostic system based on photoplethysmographic pulse wave analysis. The device evaluates vascular and endothelial function by measuring parameters such as arterial stiffness, vascular age, stress index, pulse wave characteristics, heart rate, and blood oxygen saturation.
Biomedical Software
Advanced biomedical software comprises digital tools used to collect, process, visualise, store, and analyse multimodal biomedical and physiological data. These systems support standardised examination workflows, secure management of measurement records, signal processing, and longitudinal monitoring, and are widely applied in clinical research, preventive medicine, telemedicine, and health-monitoring environments.
Software included
MultiSens
MultiSens is a biomedical software platform for integrated management of non-invasive measurement workflows and user profiles. It includes a desktop application for operator-guided examinations, a structured database for storing client records and measurement history, and a mobile application for wearable-based data acquisition and synchronisation. The software supports centralised review of cardiovascular and physiological parameters, including heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG data.
