Karen Sokal

Karen Sokal-Gutierrez is a U.S. physician and professor at University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health. Her research focuses on the promotion of child nutrition and oral health by interdisciplinary teams including medical and dental professionals, teachers and community health workers in disadvantaged communities in California, Latin America and Asia.

This seminar will focus on the value of Lay Community Health Workers in Promoting Child Nutrition and Oral Health. Karen will give us background on the history of lay community health workers, and share her experience working with community health workers in low- and middle-income countries and in California.

During her talk Karen will, among other things, discuss a qualitative evaluation of a child obesity intervention for Latino immigrant families in California that she was part of. In it, community health workers worked with the families. If one wants to review the impactful quotes from the participants before the seminar, the article is titled:
