"As fast as matters require": On the History of the Speed of Information

This lecture takes as its starting point a project that used digital methods to investigate how newspapers in the 19th century copied, borrowed, or stole texts from one another. This exchange of texts was very extensive and puts into perspective notions of our own era’s supposedly unique sharing culture. However, the lecture focuses on the pace of this text traffic – both the expected, the actual and the perceived. It is a story that is about much more than just physical infrastructure and technical transmission capacity.
