Malmö, Italia. The lives, struggles, and memories of Italian migrants in a shipyard town

In the 1940s, Kockums began recruiting workers abroad. Many arrived from shipyards in Italy. They were welders, carpenters, mechanics and electricians who, along with their skills, also brought a tradition of trade union organizing. And then came Malmö's Italian Club, the city's first migrant association, founded in 1948.

Through archival material, newspaper cuttings, photographs, and original interviews, “Malmö, Italia” follows the life of Italian migrants in Malmö under more than fifty years. The exhibition tells us a local history that is also a European history of migration and work.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Labour Movement's Archives in Skåne, Malmö City Archives, the Institute for Studies in Malmö's History (Malmö University), and the organisation Malmö Antifascista. It will be on display until March 19, 2027.
