Presentation

I am a PhD student in Criminology at Malmö University. My dissertation is on policing of public space in Sweden, and, more specifically, on hot spot policing defined as policing of small areas of unsafety and/or high-crime (e.g. busy streets/squares, parks, shopping/business areas).

So far, work on the dissertation has included the evaluation of the police efficacy in crime prevention (quantitative study I). In the second study, I tried to compare different sources of hot spots (surveys, recorded crime, police) and highlight the importance of community inclusion in place-based strategies. Further work includes what is 'business as usual' for policing and crime/disorder in the hot spots (socially dense urban areas). Using systematic social observations, it explores the postmodernity of policing public space, where traditional patrols are complemented with some new forms through privatisation or technologies. I plan to land a dissertation with contributions on the concepts and democratisation of policing and community safety.

Teaching activities are in courses on criminological theories, contemporary criminology and research methods.

My previous experiences include being a police officer in Serbia and a researcher on security policies and institutional reform in Serbia and the Western Balkans at the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy. My undergraduate background is from the police academy in Serbia, while my postgraduate is in criminology and criminal law (Serbia) and in criminology and social research methods (Lancaster University, UK).
