Presentation

I am a PhD student in Criminology at Malmö University. My dissertation is on policing of small public spaces (hot spots) of crime, disorder or unsafety (e.g. busy streets/squares, parks, shopping/business areas).

Dissertation includes the evaluation of the patrols efficacy in crime prevention (quantitative study I). In the second study, I compare different sources of hot spots (citizens' perceptions, recorded crime, police) and highlight the importance of community inclusion in place-based strategies. Further work includes what is 'business as usual' for policing and crime/disorder in the hot spots (socially dense squares). Using systematic social observations, it explores the postmodernity of policing public space, where traditional patrols are complemented with some new forms through privatisation or technologies. I plan to land a dissertation with contributions on the concepts and implications for policing and community safety.

My broader interests and work include democratisation and social justice.

Teaching activities are in courses on criminological theories, contemporary criminology and research methods.

My previous experiences include being a police officer in Serbia and a researcher on security policies and institutional reform in Serbia and the Western Balkans at the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy. My undergraduate background is in the police studies (Serbia), while postgraduate is in criminology and social research methods (Lancaster University, UK) and criminology and criminal law (Serbia).
