About the project

Public transport travellers still face a lack of information or information that is not adapted to the needs of the traveller, especially in disturbed situations. Previous research shows that if context-based information is used, such as the traveller's location and itinerary, a more relevant and personalised travel support can be provided to the traveller. In addition, an ongoing project (TRV 2023/83129) has identified specific needs of travellers with visual and hearing impairments that are in line with the needs of many travellers without disabilities. However, current travel support systems do not fully exploit the technological advances in recent years that enable better information sharing and identification of travellers’ contexts.

For context-based travel support

This project aims to contribute with knowledge that enables practice to move towards more context-based travel support, with the purpose of increasing accessibility and robustness and attracting more travellers to choose public transport.

The goal is to clarify how such travel support can be realised by answering the following sub-questions: 

  • What relevant needs connected to the context can be identified among travellers?
  • What shortcomings and obstacles in information access and sharing can be identified?
  • What data processing needs exist and how can these be solved, both from a functional perspective and from a privacy perspective?
  • How should information be created, communicated and stored by different types of actors to enable significantly improved context-based travel support?
  • How can the results be demonstrated and validated?
  • What are the most important areas for further research?

From identified needs to prototypes

The work on some of the questions above will involve an identification of any coordination needs between different actors. The project includes, among other things, actor workshops, focus groups with travellers and literature studies. Based on identified needs, possible solutions will be developed, which will be realised and demonstrated in the form of prototypes. These will also be used for validation through feedback from the focus groups.

The results will be presented to the travellers who have chosen to participate in the study, to the Swedish Transport Administration and other actors in public transport, as well as the scientific community.
