Project description
In this one-year project, we investigate how large language models (LLMs) can be used to create novel journaling and writing-based tools that support embodied introspective practices. The ultimate goal of our research is to support the safe introduction of this emerging technology into self-care and well-being that could help individuals acquire emotional regulation skills that consider both cognitive and bodily self-awareness.
In recent years, laypeople have used LLM-based chatbots as tools for introspection. This development points to a shift in how we approach technologies; however, there is a lack of research on how people interact with these AI tools and how, in combination with embodied introspection, they can contribute to positive outcomes in self-care.
As more users turn to chatbots for introspection, better foundational knowledge is needed to ensure the design of safe and ethical LLM-based tools. Thus, this research will generate both design and ethical guidelines to inform LLM-based technologies for embodied introspective practices. As such, this research will have an impact on the responsible development of new AI-based personalised health technologies aimed at emotion regulation.
