"The only thing we have succeeded in is failing" – on Sweden's education and labour market policy

Despite a great need for skilled labour, only around 30 per cent of young people are currently enrolled in vocational programmes at upper secondary school – far from the 55 per cent that would be needed, according to Alexandru Panican, professor of social work at Malmö University. At the same time, around 25 per cent leave school without upper secondary qualifications, which means that many young people are at risk of unemployment and long-term need for support.

During his inaugural lecture, he will explain why the education system contributes to youth unemployment and how labour market policy, which is intended to facilitate establishment, actually risks reproducing unemployment.

Welcome to Alexandru Panican's inaugural lecture as professor! The lecture will be held in Swedish.

Breakfast will be served.
