Welcome to the Seminar in Social Work with Helen Thomas-Hughes, Associate Professor in Community-Engaged Research and Pedagogy, University of Bristol. The seminar will be in English.

Abstract

This seminar will examine the benefits of incorporating community-building into parenting programmes. The seminar will draw on empirical data from a case study of third sector organisations (TSOs) delivering the Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities (SFSC) programme in the UK to explore the impact that supporting parents in developing and sustaining social networks can have on both parental wellbeing and child outcomes. The seminar will also explore some of the complexities that can arise when TSOs attempt to deliver community-building components within a funding environment that focuses on short-term, individual-level outcomes. The session will take the form of a presentation, followed by a facilitated discussion.

Chairman

Tove Samzelius, Senior Lecturer, Department of Social Work
