How to Address Highly Challenging Young People in Social Work? Results from an Evaluation of an Innovative Residential Care Setting in Germany

Severely traumatised and deprived children and adolescents are often highly challenging for the current institutions of child and youth welfare. In the same time, they are in a high need for help and chances for development. The most challenging young people often face expulsions from services or are locked away in "closed institutions". The project PortNord in Bremen/Germany tries to go different ways. It created a unique pedagocial setting, avoids exclusions and could reach unexpectedly positive results with this target group. After a short introduction on the contexts and backgrounds of the project, this seminar presents the design and the key results of an evaluation that had been carried by the author within a research team.

Six thematic areas of tension

The main focus will be on six "thematic areas of tension" that reflect the special qualities and main characters of the project. After a closing statement, there will be room for discussion of the results in a comparative format.

The seminar will be held in English language
