Welcome to a migration seminar titled Attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccination: distributing a survey questionnaire in Skåne and reaching underrepresented groups.
Speaker
Mariam Hassan, doctoral student, Department of Clinical Sciences, Malmö, Lund University.
Abstract
Minoritised ethnic groups experienced a disproportionate burden of COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality. Nevertheless, vaccination programmes have been less effective in these population groups, which may, in part, contribute to their elevated risk of disease burden. Despite this, minority groups are generally underrepresented in research. Thus, the factors influencing low vaccine uptake among various minoritised groups remain unclear, particularly in the context of Sweden. Previous literature has pointed towards the interplay of various multilevel factors impacting vaccination. Therefore, obtaining a better understanding of the context-specific influences and addressing them is important to increase vaccine uptake.
The World Health Organization has developed questionnaires capturing behavioural and social drivers of vaccination. We adapted the questionnaire to a Swedish context and distributed two questionnaires in Skåne during the years 2022 and 2023-2024, respectively. With the benefit of hindsight, we adapted the recruitment strategy to improve outreach among unvaccinated individuals, individuals residing in socioeconomically vulnerable areas, and minoritised ethnic groups. During the distribution of the second questionnaire, several adjustments were necessary to increase the response rate among minoritised ethnic groups. This presentation will address the various lessons learnt from distributing survey questionnaires and aiming to obtain a better representation of the population, as well as the variability in attitudes towards vaccines in the population.
