Welcome to a migration seminar titled Children and youth empowerment through sports. Participatory Action Research with sport-for-development initiatives in Sweden and Uganda.

Speaker

Comfort Ankunda, doctoral student in Sports Science, specializing in humanities and social science, Department of Sports Science, Malmö University.

Abstract

Recent decades have seen increasing belief in sport as a relevant tool for migration-related social inclusion and integration. Several sport-based initiatives are therefore implemented across the globe to cultural mixing, social cohesion and social capital necessary for integration. This research builds on the belief that to effectively facilitate sport-related social inclusion and integration, there is need for increased empowerment and meaningful participation of beneficiaries in planning, implementation and evaluation of sport-related social initiatives. Through Participatory Action Research (PAR) methods with children, youth and staff in selected sport-based initiatives, this study explores processes and possibilities of empowerment, social inclusion and integration. The PAR activities actively attempt to enhance participants’ participation, decision-making capacities and influence within the initiatives. Involvement of young people in decision-making processes in sport-related initiatives aligns with the democratic participation principles encouraged by critical researchers within the field of sport for development as essential for increased effectiveness of interventions.
