Welcome to the MIM master thesis award featuring a presentation titled Being born a non-citizen: Citizenship identification for young people born in Denmark without Danish citizenship.
Speaker
Zoé Holstein Cosnier, master's graduate from International Migration and Ethnic Relations, Department of Global Political Studies, Malmö University.
Abstract
Denmark is home to thousands of young people who were born or raised in the country but are not legally recognised as Danish citizens. Despite growing up in Danish society, attending Danish schools, and speaking the language, many face a long and complex application process to obtain Danish citizenship. The list of requirements is substantial and the process takes years. While birthright legislations have direct impact on their mobility and legal rights, the process of acquiring citizenship also has more profound implications on these individuals' identity development and ability to claim their own national identity.
This presentation sheds light on the lived experiences of young people navigating Danish birthright legislation and national identity. Based on in-depth interviews conducted in the spring of 2024, the presentation explores how young people in Denmark with migratory background are affected by the increasingly strict Danish citizenship legislation.
