Project description:
The research has, so far, focused on two key dimensions of urban inequality in Sweden: labour market integration and reinvestment in the regulated rental housing sector. Using administrative and housing data, it analyses the effects of the Metropolitan Development Initiative (MDI), a place-based labour policy, and identifies heterogeneous impacts - positive for foreign-born men aged 30–39, weaker for women, and null for older individuals. A second analysis focuses on landlord renovation behaviour, showing that renovations (proxied by large rent increases) are primarily driven by rent gaps and tenant turnover. Public landlords are significantly less likely to undertake such renovations, and neighbourhood income has limited explanatory power once other variables are accounted for. These findings offers tentative empirical support for rent gap theory, highlighting how financial incentives shape urban change even under rent regulation. Together, the studies illustrate how institutional structures produce uneven urban outcomes and how targeted interventions can function to ameliorate the negative outcomes.
This seminar will be held in Swedish, but you are welcome to ask questions in English.
