Reza Malekian, Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology, has been appointed Dean at the American University of Armenia (AUA) in Yerevan, Armenia.

“I am grateful for the trust that the University Management at AUA has shown in me by appointing me as the next Dean of the College of Science and Engineering. When your family calls you home, you answer with gratitude,” says Reza Malekian, continuing:

“You could say that AUA is the latest ‘Swedish’ university abroad. The former Vice-Chancellor previously held the role of Vice-Chancellor of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, and now their new dean is coming from Malmö University,” says Reza Malekian.

Reza Malekian has been a driving force and successful researcher at Malmö University. He is primarily known for his cutting-edge research in the rapidly growing field of intelligent transport systems. In 2023, he was honoured with a place on the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences’ 100 List for a research project that focuses on detecting heart arrhythmias in real time using a wearable sensor that records the heart’s ECG signals.

Bahtijar Vogel is Head of the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology:

“Reza has made an outstanding impact in every corner of our department. Both as a professor and as Deputy Head for Research and Doctoral Education, he has consistently gone above and beyond. His dedication, professionalism, and passion for his work are truly inspiring. Reza is someone who never hesitates to take initiative, always shows up on time, stays incredibly organised, and brings a big heart to everything he does. We wish him an amazing experience ahead full of learning, growth, and joy, but we are already looking forward to welcoming him back when the time comes,” says Bahtijar Vogel.

Reza has also been instrumental in the research conducted at the Sustainable Digitalisation Research Centre (formerly the Internet of Things and People Research Center).

“Reza’s efforts, ideas and commitment have really helped to create a strong research environment here,” says Paul Davidsson, director of the Centre.

Many happy memories

The American University of Armenia is affiliated with the University of California and accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. Reza Malekian will take up his post in Armenia in August and will continue certain assignments at Malmö University during a transition phase until a suitable replacement can be found. He will be on leave from Malmö University while acting as Dean in Armenia.

“I take many happy memories with me as I begin this new chapter. Being part of the Malmö University family has been an honour and a privilege. Although it is not easy to say goodbye, it shows how much this experience has meant to me and how proud and grateful I am for the values we have shared,” says Reza Malekian.
