About the project
The project focuses on teacher education in mathematics (statistics) for grades 4-6 in primary school and is carried out through a collaboration between two universities in Sweden. Statistics is chosen as a mathematical content since it is rarely, and unjustifiably, recognised as a challenging area in school. Research shows that prospective teachers (PTs) do not benefit from what they learn during seminars at the university when they are teaching during their practicum in schools. The project aims to achieve knowledge in an under-researched area, aiming to create knowledge on how teacher educators can develop their competence to support PTs' development in constructing and implementing lesson plans in mathematics.
Project structure
Studying the work with PTs around lesson planning allows for a defined project focus that simultaneously contributes to knowledge about the transformation from university seminars to practical periods in schools and vice versa. Analysis of data deriving from 135 PTs enables the development of knowledge linked to several focus areas in well-founded planning of teaching, such as anchoring lessons in governing documents and research, teaching based on students' perceptions of the subject area, lesson activities that focus students' learning on central mathematical aspects, as well as relevant assessment. Hence, in addition to specifically focusing on lesson planning, the contributions of the project will include general aspects that go beyond the lesson planning itself.
