About the project
Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease in the mouth, is associated with an increased risk for systemic comorbidities, and recent studies suggest an association of periodontitis and an overall increased cancer risk. F. nucleatum, which is vastly increased in the mouth in periodontitis, can be found in colorectal cancer (CRC) tissue and seems involved in multiple aspects of this type of cancer. Oral and intestinal tissue samples, together with other host factors (diet, clinical parameters, etc.), are collected in this prospective controlled cohort study and analysed to identify mechanisms that may contribute to the observed association between F. nucleatum and CRC development.
