About the course

This is an introduction course on the essentials of critical thinking and reading. It explores how to critically evaluate information and separate assumptions from grounded arguments. We’ll look at concepts connected to argumentation as well as language precision.

This course is directed to students beginning their university studies and want to improve their skills in critical thinking. Looking beyond your academic life, developing your critical thinking and reading skills will also serve you in your professional and social life when it comes to problem-solving and decision-making.

The course runs at half speed during half of the semester and is completely distance with some scheduled online meetings. The learning activities include lectures, seminars, and exercises.

Course content

The aim of the course is for the students to develop their skills in critical thinking to increase reading comprehension of English argumentative texts in order to facilitate successful academic studies.

The course includes basic argumentation analysis and identification of rhetorical patterns as well as knowledge of different reading strategies.

Course evaluation

The university provides all students who are participating in, or have completed, a course to express their experiences and views on the course through a course evaluation which is organized at the end of the course. The university will collate the course evaluations and provide information about their results and any actions prompted by them. The results shall be made available to the students. (HF 1:14).
