A resilient total defence is not only a matter of military strength – it relies just as much on social cohesion. Democracy, human rights, and trust between citizens and institutions are vital to Sweden’s capacity to withstand threats in times of crisis and war.

A national research network

Malmö University leads a network focusing on peace, democracy and human rights within Campus Total Defence. This is a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary hub where the main focus is on how we can work to strengthen and secure peace, democracy and human rights in Sweden and globally.

Sweden has long had strong research in peace, democracy and human rights, with well-developed national and international research networks and collaborations. There are several points of contact and areas of collaboration between Malmö University and other actors, and we see that this initiative provides us with many synergies.

For Malmö University, this area is central and directly related to the university's Strategy 2030, which focuses on the open university and the university's contribution to democracy, social development and human rights. We are not alone as an educational institution in this regard; these values are central to us all.

About research in this field

In the field of peace, democracy and human rights, we want to create an open and exploratory environment where many different perspectives have a place. We see that these are large and multifaceted fields with ongoing research at all our educational institutions, and they encompass a range of different disciplines and approaches.

Therefore, right from the start, we want to welcome all researchers who see that their work can contribute to the understanding of peace, democracy and human rights from a total defence perspective.
