Research for breakfast – a new initiative

A total of 14 open lectures with new professors and honorary doctors will be held in a collective concept with catering in the Orkanen building during the Annual Academic Celebration week.
Drug trafficking and violence, recollections of a lifetime interviewing Holocaust survivors, and AI and video games – just some of the themes of newly-appointed professors’ and honorary doctors’ lectures which you can attend while enjoying breakfast or afternoon tea!
The series of open lectures is a new initiative set to take place Malmö University’s Annual Academic Celebration.
Since its founding, Malmö University has been characterised by openness, creativity, and a strong commitment to society and collaboration with the surrounding community and beyond. This focus is also reflected in the University's overall policy document for the next five years, subtitled ‘Strategy for an open university with knowledge and society in focus’ – which was recently approved by the University Board.
“These open lectures are a fantastic opportunity to learn about and reflect on the knowledge and scientific and social contributions made by the professors and honorary doctors,” says Vice-Chancellor Mia Rönnmar.
Every October, Malmö University holds its Annual Academic Celebration established to highlight the University's academic achievements and research, and to raise awareness of the University's role as an important player in societal development.
"You can start the day by stepping straight into the room and learning about exciting new research findings, new ideas and solutions to social problems, and meeting people who want to change the world!
“It's a unique opportunity to get to know the innermost core of the University in an uncomplicated and informal way,” says Hanna Solberger, project manager for the Annual Academic Celebration.
During the week, there are inaugural lectures by new professors, as well as lectures with this year's honorary doctors, made up of those both inside or outside of academia, who've been given the title for their outstanding contributions to science, culture, or social development.
Speakers include the new professors Kim Möller, Annika Olsson, and Alexandru Panican. Their research focuses on international drug trafficking, the role of storytelling for individuals and society, and paradoxes in the welfare state, respectively.
“The lectures will showcase the breadth and relevance of the research and the University’s close collaboration with the surrounding community. It feels great that we can offer this to our partners, the media, and the interested public,” says Vice-Chancellor Mia Rönnmar.
The open lectures will be held in the restaurant at the University's Orkanen building, Nordenskiöldsgatan 10, Malmö. Some of the lectures are in Swedish: see the lecture title for which language the lecture will be held in.
