Mikael Mangold is a researcher and works with a small research group which makes analyses of comprehensive national building-specific information. The PhD students in the group are analysing investments in disadvantaged areas, segregation and energy poverty. The research group also work with machine learning and computer vision for analysing street view images of buildings in Sweden, specifically for the identification of cultural heritage values, renovation needs and building usage types. The analyses are often delivered to Swedish authorities, primarily Boverket and public housing companies in Gothenburg. The focus of the research is mostly on segregation and energy efficiency in relation to EU, national and local targets.

Mikael Mangold is employed as an unpaid docent at Malmö University, and employed as a researcher at RISE.

Mikael Mangold also works in the field of humanitarian aid, specializing in water, sanitation, solid waste and coordination. Field missions are done for MSF and MSB.
