Project description
Social Validation The concept of 'validation' can, somewhat simplified, be translated as confirming something as valid. Similarly, the concept of ‘social validation’ can be understood as a process in which individuals' behaviors, thoughts, beliefs, and/or feelings are assessed as "socially valid". Social validation is part of the more extensive and prolonged socialization process where individuals, through internalizing collective norms, values, and behavior patterns, become full-fledged members of their community.
Social validation refers to the phenomenon where individuals seek confirmation or approval for their beliefs, actions, or feelings from others in order to feel accepted and understood. Therefore social validation can also be regarded as the "collective's feedback" on how well an individual has internalized the community's norms and values.
The analyses in this study are based on a ethnographically collected data from an so called "HVB-hem" (Residential care units for unaccompanied children and adolescents). The overall purpose of these units is for them to function as "home-like socialization arena" where the newly arrived children and adolescents are introduced to those norms and values that will enable them to live an independent and integrated life in Swedish society in the future.
