Scholarly Sandbox: AI Toys in Research and Analysis
Co-organised with the GPS AI Politics Hub. Introduction by associate professor and senior lecturer Michael Strange.
Join us for this seminar where we explore the transformative impact of AI on research and analysis from the perspective of the social sciences and humanities. In AI, ‘sandboxes’ refer to the creation of communities that test and discuss the potential opportunities and risks of new models prior to real-world adoption. In our own GPS sandbox, we will outline some of the main categories of AI tools as relevant to our research and writing. These tools can perform most of the core tasks of being an academic, from:
• Developing a research topic
• Finding literature
• Analysing data
• Suggesting a detailed paper structure
• To providing content, and even
• Checking whether the text risks appearing plagiarised
What space is then left for us as humans in the future of scholarship? To illustrate the point , parts of this text, including the title, were written using AI. Does that then mean it lacks human voice? Through outlining how AI is already being used in research of relevance to GPS, the seminar seeks to foster a thought-provoking dialogue on the balance between AI and human creativity, critical thinking, and ethical considerations in academia. Come play with ideas and discover how AI toys can complement, rather than replace, the invaluable contributions of human scholars.
