Abstract

In my research I have used the printing technique lithography to better understand how comics were developed in the mid 19th century. During this research I have gathered material of various kinds and produced material of my own. This is stored in folders, binders, boxes, on hard drives and cloud services. Most of it is documentation, some of it comes from communication and interaction, some could (possibly) be labelled art and finally some could also be categorized as research data. The last category differs from the others since I by regulation of law am obliged to archive and publish it. And this is where the problems begin. Which of the material in this cluster of things are research data? How do one distinguish it from art, and how can this label affect the material in relation to storage, ownership, and artistic value? In this presentation I will discuss my reflections on aspects and concerns regarding research data in relation to artistic research. This presentation is part of the outcome of my participation in the Advanced Study Group; Creative Data Lab, at Pufendorf Institute, Lund University.
