Ethnic Discrimination in Hiring: Causes and Countermeasures - A Systematic Review of the Empirical Evidence
Welcome to the Migration Seminar!
Profile:
Pinar Aslan Akay, PhD in social work, research coordinator at the Migration Studies Delegation and affiliated researcher at University of Gävle
Abstract:
Over the past four decades, research has consistently shown the presence of ethnic discrimination in recruitment processes. However, a comprehensive synthesis of the literature on the causes of ethnic discrimination and effective measures to prevent and reduce it has been lacking. This presentation is based on a systematic review that synthesizes empirical evidence published since 2015, focusing on the explanations behind ethnic discrimination in recruitment and strategies to mitigate it. The review adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, examining both quantitative and qualitative studies, based on a search across seven databases. We present dominant themes in the literature about the causes of ethnic discrimination, propose several evidence-based measures to prevent ethnic discrimination in recruitment and offer suggestions for future research.
