Marie Torstensson Levander is Professor of Health and Society with a specialization in Criminology at the Department of Criminology, Malmö University, and an affiliated researcher at the Institute of Criminology, Centre for Analytic Criminology, University of Cambridge. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from Stockholm University in 1987, became Associate Professor in Sociology in 1994, was promoted to Professor in Social Work with a focus on Criminology in 2007, and was appointed Professor in Health and Society in 2009. Her research interests include criminal careers, longitudinal and comparative studies, gender differences and crime, policing and crime, urban crime, crime and safety, and crime prevention. She has previously conducted research at the Police Academy Research Unit (1987–1998), Umeå University (1999–2001), and Linnaeus University (2002–2004). Marie Torstensson Levander is the principal investigator of the longitudinal and comparative project MINDS (The Malmö Individual and Neighbourhood Development Study) and, together with Professor Per-Olof Wikström, leads the VR-funded project When violence becomes an acceptable action alternative: An analytic criminology approach to advance our understanding of the causes of violent crime and its prevention.
