About the project
General aim
The general aim of this research project is to develop, evaluate and implement an internet-based intervention for adolescents with Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain, which is effective and suitable for general dental care as well as specialist dental care.
The development of the internet-based intervention will be based on the best scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values and expectations as part of evidence-based medicine. This research project includes a unique multidisciplinary research group and cooperation between specialists in orofacial pain, general dental practitioners, and psychologists at Malmö University, specialist dental clinics in Sweden, Folktandvården Skåne AB, and Psykologpartners AB with the purpose of including broad expertise. The research leaders are all clinically active and have a long tradition of research collaboration.
Significance of this research project
This research project is in line with the vision published by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SKR), stating that “In 2025, Sweden will be the best in the world in using the opportunities of digitalization and e-health in order to facilitate people to achieve good and equal health and well-being, and to develop and strengthen their own resources for increased independence and participation in social life”.
In line with this, Region Skåne has appointed an e-health strategy that consistently supports the paradigm shift to a more patient-centred and health-promoting approach as well as digitalised care. To be able to achieve the vision for e-health in Sweden, a substantial element of innovation in the work of developing and implementing new e-health solutions is essential. The development of IBT for adolescents with TMD pain is one contribution to realizing the vision of e-health.
