Project description
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the oral cavity associated with an increased risk for systemic comorbidities. This project is focused on the development of experimental models for understanding the interaction between the oral microbiome and the human host in periodontitis and associated systemic inflammatory conditions.
Models will be based on multispecies biofilms grown on human cells to mimic the complex oral environment both in health and disease. Mass-spectrometry based proteomics will generate a detailed molecular profile of the host and microbiome response in the experimental models and in biological material from well-defined patient cohorts. This will give insight on different stages of disease progression and generate biomarkers with clinical and diagnostic importance.
