Project description
This project reflects the current focus on addressing injustices and healing wounds through spatialized memory work facilitated by public art. In Sweden, municipalities have often taken the lead in reparative efforts. However, since they are not traditionally memory institutions, this role must be integrated into their governance structures.
The impact of public memory art should therefore be examined within the broader contexts of urban development, spatial production, and the evolving definition of "public" in public art. This study advances the conceptualization of reparative memory within a spatial framework by synthesizing and expanding scholarly debates and examining its meanings and practices through public art. Master Narratives, a municipally commissioned public artwork created in collaboration with individuals affected by far-right terrorism in Malmö, serves as the case study.
By tracing its development, inauguration, and reception, the project investigates how commemorative artistic practices negotiate memory, and repair, as well as the challenges and possibilities inherent in municipally sanctioned reparative projects.
