The aim of the course is for the students to develop their skills in critical thinking to increase reading comprehension of English argumentative texts in order to facilitate successful academic studies.
The course includes basic argumentation analysis and identification of rhetorical patterns as well as knowledge of different reading strategies.
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
1. explain basic concepts in argumentation analysis and rhetoric;
2. critically analyse texts using argumentation analysis and rhetorical patterns.
This course can be combined with English Grammar Skills for University Studies (AK204E), 7.5 credits and English Writing and Presentation Skills for University Studies (AK206E), 15 credits. These three courses are part of a series for developing academic skills in English.

The university provides all students who are participating in, or have completed, a course to express their experiences and views on the course through a course evaluation which is organized at the end of the course.
