The annual Lucia concerts are a cherished tradition for both Malmö Academic Choir and many of our concertgoers. The concert programme blends classic Lucia songs and a newer repertoire, some of which has been written or arranged by members of the choir. The song 'Kom nu alla' is a favourite for many, where we eagerly gather to welcome Lucia, who spreads warmth and light.
In addition to the music, the Lucia costumes worn by the choir are also special to our Lucia processions. These costumes were specifically designed for Malmö Academic Choir, with inspiration drawn from historical texts and images of Lucia celebrations from the past.
The source of inspiration can be found at Kulturen in Lund, where one can read about Lucia celebrations in the 1860s, when Lucia and her handmaidens were dressed in traditional parish costumes, and Lucia wore a crown of candles with lingonberry twigs.
An old photograph of a girl in Torna Härad wearing a cap with sewn ribbons falling over her shoulders inspired the choir's decorated lingonberry wreaths with long silk ribbons, and the men’s long shirts in cream-coloured linen are reminiscent of the traditional work shirts once used in Skåne.
