How are research and academic writing shaped by language, culture and global power relations? And what happens to research that does not quite fit established academic formats?

In this seminar, we meet Lauren Ila Misiaszek, who combines research on higher education with creative and critical forms of academic writing. Drawing on her experiences as a foreign
professor within the Chinese Normal University system, she discusses how certain perspectives, languages and modes of expression are often marginalised within academia, despite carrying important forms of knowledge.

The seminar is based on the article “April 31 a fugia hacia ‘the presence of absence’ in Chinese higher education” (2025), which participants are asked to read in advance. During the seminar, participants will discuss how the text offers new perspectives on their own research and writing. The session concludes with an open discussion, where participants are invited to ask questions, particularly related to publishing interdisciplinary, creative or otherwise non‑traditional academic work.

The seminar is aimed at researchers and teachers with an interest in higher education, academic writing and alternative forms of knowledge production.
